A Brief Overview of the Acadia

So, what exactly makes the GMC Acadia such an alluring SUV? Why do people come back to buy them model year after model year? There are some very good reasons as to why the Acadia stands out, but in order to fully appreciate them, it is important to know about the Acadia’s beginnings and how it has changed over time.

First Model Year of the Acadia

GMC debuted the Acadia for the 2007 model year, kicking off its legacy of SUV superiority. It has been assembled year after year at the GM Spring Hill plant in Tennessee. Serving as a replacement for the GMC Safari (a body-on-frame minivan), Pontiac Montana SV6 (another minivan), and the GMC Envoy (a body-on-frame midsize SUV), the Acadia was originally built on the GM Lambda platform as a full-size crossover SUV.

The 2007 Acadia was powered by a naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LY7 gas-powered engine, which produced 275 hp and 251 lb-ft of torque. It came matched to a six-speed automatic transmission—the M7V on front-wheel drive versions and the M7X on all-wheel drive variants. In a practice ahead of its time, buyers got to choose whichever drivetrain they felt best met their needs. This is the spirit in which GMC has built the Acadia ever since—focused on the needs of its drivers.

The Acadia's Closest Competitors

As you probably are already aware, the SUV segment is incredibly competitive. However, the GMC Acadia manages to stand tall against some stiff competition. The Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, and Honda Pilot all do their best to compete but often struggle to match the Acadia’s unique balance of performance, style, and forward-thinking technological features.

When stacked up against the Acadia, the Acadia offers more torque than the Explorer. It also has a larger fuel tank and better overall fuel economy, meaning you’ll make fewer stops at the gas station. The Explorer is more expensive than the Acadia. That seems reasonable at first glance—it is slightly bigger. But, with its extra width, the Explorer can be more difficult to maneuver and park.

The Toyota Highlander is similar in size to the Acadia, and it is built with comfort in mind. The Acadia is more convenient however, requiring fewer trips to the fuel pump. While the Highlander offers slightly more horsepower, the Acadia has more torque, which enables it to transfer the power more fluidly from the engine to the wheels.

The Honda Pilot has a smaller fuel tank than the Acadia; it requires more trips to the gas station. Additionally, the Acadia generally has lower ownership costs. Given its slimmer size and shorter wheelbase, the Acadia is easier to wind through cramped parking areas, narrow city streets, and heavy traffic.

Standout Features of the Acadia

New or used, the Acadia has a few key elements that you can expect to shine. Performance is always a standout, as the GMC Acadia consistently offers a dynamic yet efficient driving experience. A choice of V6 engines is available to give you the power to head out on an adventure.

The Acadia's cabin is spacious with three rows of seating, allowing you to seat family and friends with ease. Flexible seating configurations allow you to easily adapt to your shifting passenger and cargo needs. The Acadia is always equipped with the latest and most helpful technology for safety and entertainment. Safety is a priority for GMC, so the Acadia is consistently loaded with advanced driver assistance systems to deliver peace of mind while on the road. You can stay entertained and connected on the go with smartphone app integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, intuitive and attractive touchscreen interfaces, and available premium audio systems that deliver crisp audio quality throughout the cabin.

The Acadia’s Body Style/Class

From 2017 to 2023, the Acadia was built as a midsize crossover SUV. With its 2024 redesign, the Acadia is back to being a full-size, three-row crossover SUV. It has a 120.9-inch wheelbase and holds seven to eight passengers. This SUV aims to make a statement whatever you use it for, whether you own a full or midsize variant.
