History of the GMC Sierra
GMC has been manufacturing trucks since the 1900s, though the first GMC-named truck didn't hit the market until 1912. Throughout the early and mid-20th century, GMC kept producing quality trucks that were used by farmers, workers, and even soldiers in WWI and WWII. However, GMC wanted to go beyond just creating a work vehicle, focusing on creating unique styling and comfortable interiors. The stylish curves of the 1950s were prevalent, and throughout the '70s and '80s, GMC added more modern features to the line. Then, in 1988, the GMC Sierra was released to the market.
The 1988 Sierra was GMC's step into creating trucks that mixed comfort elements with a rugged design to create a truck that could get any job done in style. However, it was in 1999, with the release of the second generation, that GMC really committed to the luxury element of this truck. The GMC Sierra was available as a 1500 light-duty model that still packed a lot of power and as a 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty model that kicked capabilities up a notch. Available in three cab sizes, Sierra 1500 owners could ensure they had enough room for passengers if they needed it. The truck bed came in three sizes as well, and you had the choice between a V6 or V8 engine.
The third generation of the Sierra ran from 2007-2013 and saw a complete redesign, including increased engine power, a stronger frame, and better suspension. The most powerful V8 engine available could get up to 403 hp. Aerodynamics were also significantly improved in the third-generation Sierras, giving better fuel economy and a more comfortable highway driving experience. There were a couple of refreshes during this generation, adding new features like a six-speed automatic transmission and a touchscreen navigation system.
2014 saw the introduction of the fourth-generation GMC Sierra. This generation had similar engine options as the third generation, from a 4.3L V6 to a 6.2L V8, but GMC was able to increase the output to a maximum of 420 hp. Technology has come a long way in this generation, with a touchscreen infotainment center, Bluetooth connectivity, USB connections, Bose audio systems, and available OnStar communication. This generation also saw the introduction of more aluminum components to reduce weight while still remaining strong.
2019 saw the introduction of the fifth-generation Sierra, which added a new four-cylinder turbo engine option, providing 310 hp. The biggest V8 engine of this generation provides 420 hp. A diesel engine is also available and can tow up to 13,200 lbs. Adding even more tech features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Sierra has continued to integrate the most recent technological advancements into its truck line. Functionally, this generation has seen significant improvements over previous ones while also providing a facelift of style. The modern curves, color choices, and range of wheel rim options are sure to impress.
GMC Sierra Full Truck Lineup
The Sierra has several sizes available, including the 1500, 2500 HD, and 3500 HD. While the 1500 is a great light-duty truck that can still get a ton of work done, sometimes you need more power. The 2500 and 3500 HD offer heavy-duty performance with increased engine power, towing capacity, and payload capacity. These trucks are made for hard work.
Here at Crossroads GMC, we sell both new and used Sierra 1500, 2500 HD, and 3500 HD models. We know the specs for these trucks inside and out, so we can help you find the best truck for your needs, whether you want it for work or simply as your daily driver. We will discuss what you are looking to get out of a new or used truck, and through a thorough analysis, we can help you determine which model is the best for your needs. Do you really need a 3500 HD, or would a 2500 HD provide more than enough towing capability? We can help you answer that question and more.
