Sometimes you come across a vehicle that just stops you in your tracks. With a combination of exceedingly good looks and personality to boot, the new 2023 Sierra 1500 AT4X is a showstopper. As your GMC Sierra dealer, we know a thing or two about the Sierra, and we can honestly say that the AT4X trim is something you are going to want to experience for yourself. Packed with features designed to provoke “oohs” and “awes,” the AT4X is a truly rugged off-roading warrior.

It’s Got the Look

From the rugged monstrous façade to the explosion of upgrades inside, no corners were cut in the making of the AT4X. The first thing you notice is an aggressive grille, grinning from headlamp to headlamp, which has Dark Nickel accents elevating the overall look. The grille is held in place by a boxy front end, complete with GMC’s signature C-shaped headlamps. The front and rear lower black fascia bubble out, breaking up the sharp angles. A power sunroof breaks up the roofline, a pretty terrific feature for stargazing or letting the sun in. Chunky mud tires finish off the look and function of the exterior.

GMC uses a series of finishes on the exterior that creates a more interesting look, and that is carried inside with the interior design. Inside you will find full-grain leather seating with technical-grain leather accents. Vanta ash hardwood trim is used and finished with dark tones to match the Obsidian Rush color scheme. The combination of real wood and leather creates a refined and robust atmosphere.

High-Class Comforts

Heated seats with lumbar are commonplace now, so what did GMC do? They took all the features that are becoming standard and made them even better. Both driver and passenger front seats come equipped with a 16-way power driver seat, but this isn’t any ole power seat. These seats are bumped up with lumbar and massage. We can’t imagine anything better than relaxing after a long day off-roading than kicking back in your lux AT4X and letting the seats massage you as you drive home.

For additional comfort, the seat cushions and seat back are heated, along with the steering wheel. Again, everything is taken up a notch with ventilated front seats that not only cool the cushion but also the seat back. The equipped memory feature even allows you to set your vehicle to warm up the seats prior to entering and will recall your preferred seating position.

Off-Roading Like Never Before

If off-roading is a passion, then you will be passionate about the AT4X. The new Sierra 1500 trim is designed with a broad stance, meant to clear any obstacles. 11.1 inches of ground clearance allows the AT4X to roll over adverse terrain with ease, and with a front approach of 32.5 degrees and rear departure of 23.4, you don’t have to worry about getting stuck on obstacles as you clamber over. Sturdy steel is used on the front end, both as a bash plate and bumper, to increase protection against your environment. Additional skid plates are added to protect vulnerable components underneath as well, such as the oil pan and differential case.

The suspension is expertly designed with Multimatic DSSV dampers, race-car quality, and engineered to deliver the best ride. Absorbing impact better than traditional dampers, as well as using technology that returns the coil springs to position with a greater response, the Multimatic dampers are the gold standard. The AT4X is also fitted with front and rear electronic locking differentials that assure optimal traction for rough terrain. Truly a step above, the AT4X won’t let you down when you need it the most.

Powerful Performance

The AT4X comes standard with an imposing 6.2-liter V8. Roaring with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, the AT4X can tow up to 8,900 pounds. The ten-speed automatic transmission is assisted with Electronic Precision Shift which uses buttons to switch gears, providing a smoother transition. Different drive modes enhance the success of the transmission.

Modes like Terrain Mode and Tow/Haul Mode improve handling and stability. Terrain Mode utilizes special one-pedal driving for rock crawling and rough trails to minimize driver error. Tow/Haul Mode acts as a middleman, bypassing unnecessary shifting to offer improved control for greater confidence.

There is even upgraded braking tech that controls how the AT4X goes downhill, either through a cruise control type system or Powertrain Grade Braking. The latter is a program that controls downhill speed, making it safer and reducing wear on the vehicle itself. The Cruise Grade Braking is just as it sounds, setting a predetermined speed when descending a hill.

Welcome to the Tech Side

Now, of course, a truck this awesome would have a full set-up of technological advancements. The AT4X doesn’t just have one camera, it has a horde of them, all with the single goal of making your drive easier. Multiple images come together to create an overhead rendering, and there are even guidelines to make parking, maneuvering, and hitching easier. Hitch View and Guidance switches on a backup camera when attaching a trailer and activates other safety features as needed.

For hauling, the Sierra AT4X also comes with a Bed View Camera that allows you to check on your cargo. Plus, with the Inside/Rear Trailer Camera software, you have the option to check on what’s inside your trailer as well. Giving you peace of mind seems to be a theme with the AT4X.

The Sierra 1500 AT4X also comes with all the safety features we are coming to expect in high-end vehicles. Collision detection and prevention features like Rear Cross Traffic Braking make sure you are covered from almost every angle. Plus, with additions like Rear Pedestrian Braking, even those outside your vehicle are safer. Adaptive Cruise Control covers you and others by maintaining a specified distance from other cars.

The provided technology isn’t just for added convenience or safety. For a vehicle like this, you also need to have a boss sound system, well actually, Bose. A sound system that almost rivals the power of the engine, the 12-speaker Bose system will fill your luxury cabin with luxury sound. A deluxe subwoofer will also enhance your entire audio experience.

Of course, this would not be the AT4X if they left it at that. That’s why there is also a Kicker MultiPro Audio System that turns your truck bed into the most exclusive club. An independent sound system pumps your favorites beyond the cabin, so you can enjoy your music from anywhere in or around the truck. Completely protected from the elements, you can spend the day rolling through the mud and crashing through puddles and still enjoy the silky-smooth music without fear of damage to your system.

Cars, trucks, and SUVs have all come a long way in the last decade. It is difficult not to be in awe of everything being accomplished in the automotive industry. Yet, somehow, GMC found a way to create shock and awe on a cosmic scale. The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X is a truly superb vehicle, justifying its high-end price tag with high-end accouterments. The AT4X takes the crown, hands down.
