One of the best things about quality trucks is that they’re built to last. With a strong model from a trusted automaker like GMC or Chevy, you can expect to get plenty of miles out of your pickup, even with heavy regular use. This means that you can shop with confidence, whether you’re buying new or used. While new models have all of the latest features, used models don’t depreciate as much and can help you get a great value, especially if you’re on a budget.

Here at Crossroads Chevrolet GMC, we’re your used GMC Sierra dealer, your used Chevy Colorado dealer, and more. We pride ourselves on our comprehensive inventory, which covers a wide range of sizes and trim levels. On our used lot, we get in trucks of all shapes and sizes from a variety of automakers. Today, we’re going to focus on the GMC and Chevy models, mostly from the most recent two generations, as they will give you the best features and performance at a reasonable price. Whether you’re looking for a truck to use for work, play, or anything in-between, one of these quality models is sure to fit the bill.

Light Duty

Let’s kick this off with the most popular style of pickup: full-size light-duty trucks. The GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevy Silverado 1500 both fit into this category. These trucks are big enough to hold plenty of passengers and cargo and have solid towing capacities, too, so you can get just about any job done, from home renovations to professional contract gigs. The Sierra and Silverado are very similar to each other on a mechanical level, and both are constructed with durable materials and built to last. In general, the Silverado tends to be more affordable, and the Sierra is a bit more upscale, but this can vary from trim level to trim level.

Since these models are so popular, we often have several in stock, so you’re likely to have a good selection of trims to choose from. If you’re looking for the best deal possible, you can stick to basic trims like the Silverado Work Truck or the Sierra Pro. On the other hand, if you want to get a more refined interior with features like heated seats and premium materials, more advanced technology from infotainment to safety, or even a more powerful engine, you can opt for a top-tier option like the Sierra Denali or Silverado High Country.

Midsize

There are plenty of reasons why you might opt for a midsize pickup over a full-size one. For one thing, since they don’t use as many materials, they’re generally more affordable than their full-size counterparts, both in terms of sticker price and fuel efficiency. It’s true that midsize trucks tend to have lower towing and payload capacities, but if you don’t really need to tow 10,000+ pounds, then there’s not much sense in paying extra to be able to do it. Their smaller size can also come in handy in certain situations. A larger bed might come in handy when loading up with cargo, but a bulky body becomes a problem when you’re trying to find street parking or off-roading on a trail with lots of twists and turns.

The Chevy Colorado is versatile and built for adventure, with a bold look, durable frame, and practical features throughout. The GMC Canyon has a little extra style and refinement but is every bit as capable of getting down and dirty when necessary. Like the full-size trucks, they come in a range of trim levels that offer a variety of price points and included features.

Heavy-Duty

Most drivers won’t ever need more power than a light-duty full-size pickup can provide, but if you have big jobs that need doing or a particularly heavy trailer or boat that’s part of your vacation plans, then you’ll want to spring for heavy-duty (HD). HD trucks are pricier, but that money buys you some truly mind-blowing stats when it comes to towing and payload capacities.
Both the Silverado HD and the Sierra HD have two different levels to choose from. 3500 HD trucks offer you top-tier strength, while 2500 HD models offer a middle ground between the beastly 3500 HD and the relatively tame 1500. These trucks come standard with a V8 engine, but to unlock their best stats, you’ll want to look for a diesel powertrain rather than the standard gasoline choice. When it comes to options, they offer a similar range to the other trucks: trim levels ranging from Silverado WT and Sierra Pro to Silverado High Country and Sierra Denali, with a touch more upscale comfort and style on the GMC models.

Off-Road Ready

No matter which size truck you go with, you can find a model that’s perfect for off-roading. Whether you like to explore the great outdoors by hitting the trails or just want a tough-as-nails truck so you can always be ready for bad weather or poorly-maintained dirt roads, these pickups are worth considering. They come with special equipment like tow hooks, protective skid plates, locking differentials, and an off-road-tuned suspension. Newer models may also come with unique technology, like extra camera angles for navigation trails and different drive modes optimized for a variety of terrain.

As we mentioned earlier, midsize trucks have an advantage off-road, since their smaller size makes them more nimble. The Chevy Colorado has two off-road trims: the Z71 and the ZR2. The Z71 is more affordable and plenty capable, but if you want to be ready to tackle just about anything, the ZR2 is the gold standard. On the GMC side, you can look for the Canyon AT4 or the more powerful AT4X.

The Silverado 1500 got its own version of the ZR2 in the 2022 model year, and the Sierra 1500 has had an AT4 model since the 2019 model year. The Silverado also offers some less-intense off-road models, like the Custom Trail Boss and LT Trail Boss. When it comes to off-road HD trucks, choices are more limited. There’s been a Sierra HD AT4 since the 2020 model year, but Chevy didn’t release a Silverado HD ZR2 until the 2024 model year, so you’re not likely to find one used just yet.
